After starting her music career as a folk singer, she gained her reputation as a country artist with successful albums when she came to the U.S in the 1960s. After a career spent performing and recording in many countries, including the U.S, she retired in the 1980s after having spent most of her life living in Canada. In her retirement, Parton received a standing ovation as she finished her set at a Country Music Association concert, and she also received a standing ovation for her retirement acceptance speech. The first and only female to win the Pop Artist of the Year award at the age of 18, Pink is perhaps best known for her hit singles ‘CHEESY’, ‘SOMETHING BIG’, and ‘SOS’. The former featured in the movie Thelma and Louise, while the latter is featured in the film Thelma and Louise: The Great Divorce. Her greatest hits collection, released in 2009, includes 15 plus single-artist tracks, making her one of the most successful female pop stars of all time. While her career as an artist has turned many off, Pink remains one of the most popular pop stars of all time, having sold over 30 million records worldwide. Her music has been covered by many artists, and her singles have been covered by many others, making her a history-making artist.

Hootie and the Blowfish

The original Hootie and the Blowfish, Tobias and Paul, made history in 1980 with their first studio album, Black Magic, which became an international hit. The pair also released three singles that year, including ‘What on Earth’, which was an international hit and was followed by ‘My Asthma’, which was a Top Ten single in both the U.K and U.S. In the year that followed, Hootie and the Blowfish released six more singles, but their album My Asthma remained a steady seller, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. To this day, their album remains a classic, selling in excess of 200,000 copies worldwide.

Celine Dion

One of the most successful and iconic former pop stars of all time, Celine Dion hit her peak in the 1980s with her hit single ‘Beautiful’, which topped the charts in 80 different countries and earned her a Grammy for Best Song. The single also became her best-selling single of all time, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. In her later years, Celine’s focus went back to her acting career, which she continued to produce and star in after her 1980 retirement. Her last film role was in the 1991 film I Am Love, opposite Sarah Jessica Parker.

The eponymous film shot to worldwide success in 1980, and it was on the strength of its opening weekend that delivered Celine Dion to the audience.
